—Hi Ming, Ive been checking out some videos on the group leader website and doing some research as well. Wanted to run a question by you… What do you think of INTERNAL wing chun? Is there any truth to it (meaning, using qi to generate power)? Is there any element of qi in your rebel wing chun systerm? Thanks
Ming—At its simplest, Qi or Chi is focus. What the mind imagines or directs with focus (and training), it can make the body perform with incredible results. Is there a mystical power that people attribute to this? Some believe that, but the problem here is consistency of results and myth vs reality. Internal and external structures used to reinforce (channel) the body into actions or to assist it under duress are the result of intense and trained focus. This, I teach in detail.
—Ok that I understand. What I don’t understand is how certain teachers teach things like “sinking chi” and “nim lik”. Which are the ultimate sources of power. To the extent that just by touching hands with this person, you can feel it coursing through their body. Is this a parlor trick??
Ming—A lot of what you stated at the end has to do with the power of suggestion and the willingness of the receiver to the suggestions. The thing with these teachers is that they might actually believe they have some special power, etc. The problem comes in when you try testing and reproducing these same results across the board, and no one has successfully done this—at least no one to date. I’ve been around a lot of people who claim to have this sort of power or ability, including healers and such, and they all come away with unreproducible results. No consistency or reproducible effects from one person to the next—regardless that it is the same person with “power” or special abilities trying to produce the result.
It comes down to this: does it help you feel good about yourself? Does it help you with problems in your life? Does it get you through hard times, etc?
I’ve seen people injure themselves and others trying to use these kinds of things as some kind of super power. In my experience and deep research, it comes down to what people are willing to believe and what they truly wish was true. Testable results are what matters to the rest of us who have to deal with people trying to injure or harm us. That means harm our finances, too 🙂
I have experience in hypnosis as well as self-hypnosis (teaching it), and I was an amateur escape artist and amateur magician in my early days, so I know a bit about this sort of thing. When you move your hands over someone else, the sensory nerves in your skin can feel the warmth and even moisture from the other person. This is enough for some people to believe there is something else going on more than that simple action/reaction and nerve transmission. When they believe that, then their imagination starts filling in the blanks between what is actually happening with what they wish to be true. Then the mind works to make threads between the two.
But, as I said, it has to be testable and reproducible for all humans it is happening to, not just the ones who want to believe it or who try to invest a belief for the low, low price of $X.
